An industrial robot no longer works alone behind a fence. It shares the station with an operator loading parts, works alongside technicians who enter to program it and, more and more, is installed without guarding as a collaborative application. Each of these situations carries a different risk and a different way to solve it. Fachmann integrates presence detection, interlocks and safety logic under a single technical interlocutor, aligned to ISO 10218-2 and ISO 13849-1, both for the integrator designing the cell and for the plant operating it.

Collaborative applications and shared zones

The problem

An unguarded robot working next to a person depends on the whole application being safe, not just the arm. With a gripper, a cutting tool or a heavy load, the robot's force limitation is no longer enough. If the robot always runs at reduced speed to cover that risk, the cycle becomes slow and the application no longer pays off.

The Fachmann solution
PILZbackbone

PSENscan laser scanner (3 or 5.5 m range): defines 2 warning zones and 2 protective zones around the robot, with up to 10 switchable configurations. When a person enters the warning zone, the robot slows down; when they enter the protective zone, it stops. When the person moves away, the robot returns to normal speed without intervention. PNOZmulti 2 evaluates the zones and commands the robot controller, with 20 inputs and 4 safe outputs, SIL 3, PLe, and Profinet, EtherNet/IP or Profibus modules.

PILZdifferentiator

PSENradar safety radar: volumetric presence detection up to 4, 5 or 9 m depending on sensor, PLd, Cat. 3, unaffected by dust, steam or lighting conditions. It detects the person in the working volume, not only on the floor plane, and prevents restart while they remain there.

Loading stations and turntables

The problem

In a cell with a turntable or two stations, the operator loads parts on one side while the robot works on the other. An interlocked door forces the robot to stop at every load and the cell loses its advantage. If the loading-opening protection is positioned without calculating the safety distance, the operator's hand reaches the hazard zone before the robot stops.

The Fachmann solution
PILZbackbone

PSENopt II Type 4 safety light curtains, PLe per ISO 13849-1, at the loading opening: 14 mm resolution for finger protection or 30 mm for hand protection, with no dead zones (except across the 150 mm height). They withstand shocks of up to 50 g and operate from -25 to +60 °C. PNOZmulti 2 links the curtain to the table position: an interruption only stops motion if the robot is on the operator's side, and the cycle on the other side continues.

IDEM SAFETY

RFID non-contact interlocks with OSSD outputs, IP67 and PLe, with unique anti-tamper coding, on the cell's maintenance doors: they tolerate misalignment and cannot be defeated with a spare actuator.

Programming and maintenance inside the cell

The problem

To program paths or change a tool, the technician enters the cell with the robot energised. The risk is that someone closes the door behind them and switches the cell to automatic, or that the robot makes an unexpected move while the technician guides it at close range. A padlock on the door does not stop someone else from resetting the cell from the panel.

The Fachmann solution
PILZbackbone

Identification and Access Management (I.A.M.) with the Key-in-pocket function: the technician authenticates with their own transponder key and the cell cannot return to automatic while anyone is logged in inside. It supports up to 20 people at the same time on one machine (PLd, Cat. 3). The operating mode is selected with PITmode, which enables each mode only for authorised staff, up to PLd, Cat. 3. PSENmlock guard locking on the cell door: it holds with 7500 N up to PLe, with three-level RFID coding against tampering and an integrated mechanical restart interlock, and keeps the door closed while the robot moves in automatic. PITenable 3-position enabling switch for working inside the guard in service mode: if the technician releases it or presses it fully, the movement stops. PNOZmulti 2 brings mode selection, door locking and enabling together in a single software-configurable logic.

IDEM SAFETYdifferentiator

Trapped Key interlocking for cells where the access sequence should be solved mechanically, without relying on electronics: the technician removes the key from the panel to open the cell and takes it along, and while the key is inside, the cell cannot switch to automatic.
