Protection in extreme environments

Safety that withstands
the harshest conditions.

ISO 13850 · emergency stopEN 620 · conveyorsATEX / IECEx · gas and dust

We select safety devices that keep their function where standard equipment degrades: conveyors several kilometers long, high-pressure and high-temperature washdown, abrasive dust, temperatures down to -40 °C and explosive gas and dust atmospheres, without giving up the required safety level, up to PLe per ISO 13849-1.

Why it matters

A device certified in the lab
can fail in the plant.

A device's safety level is certified under test conditions. In the plant, daily washdown degrades seals, abrasive dust and UV radiation affect housings, vibration loosens fixings and a stop cable loses tension over time. An optical sensor stops seeing through steam or dust, and a standard device installed in a hazardous area can become an ignition source. The result is a safety function that does not act when needed, or that trips falsely until someone decides to bypass it. The most common deviation is selecting the device only by its safety level, without considering the environment it will operate in.

How we approach it

We start from the real conditions of each installation point.

Pull-wire emergency stop

On a long conveyor it is not possible to place emergency push buttons within reach of every point. A cable run along the conveyor allows it to be stopped from any position, and each device can cover spans of several hundred meters. Selection depends on span length, housing material and ambient temperature; monitoring of cable break and tension loss ensures the function remains available.

Belt misalignment detection

A belt that drifts off its path rubs against the structure, gets damaged and spills material, with risk of friction fire and accidents during cleaning. Misalignment detectors are placed next to the belt edge and act in two stages: a warning signal to correct the drift and a stop signal if the displacement continues. Selection depends on conveyor type, belt width and environment.

Stainless steel, high-protection devices

In food, beverage and pharmaceutical plants, devices are washed daily with pressurized water, high temperature and chemical agents. Stainless steel housings, IP69K protection and a hygienic design without crevices where product accumulates are required. A device that does not meet these conditions loses its seal within months and compromises both the safety and the hygiene of the line.

Devices for hazardous areas

In zones with combustible gas or dust, interlock switches, emergency stops, belt misalignment detectors and limit switches must be certified for the corresponding zone. Flameproof versions for gas per IEC 60079-1 and enclosure-protected versions for dust per IEC 60079-31 are available for zones 1, 2, 21 and 22, retaining the same safety function.

Presence detection in dusty, steamy or spark-prone environments

Optical light curtains and scanners lose reliability when the environment contains dust, steam, chips or welding sparks: they get dirty, trip falsely and end up bypassed. Radar detection is not affected by these conditions and detects a person's presence in the hazard zone, preventing restart while they remain there.
